In the framework of the civil peace service programme (ZFD), implemented by GIZ, inmedio provided a proferssional mediation qualification for reprentatives of ZFD’s Ethiopian partner organisations, ranging from government official and parliamentarians to NGO representatives and traditional leaders from 2009 to 2010, which was complemnted by a training of trainers, organisational development and backstopping phase from 2011 to 2014. Based on the exchange of indegenious Ethiopian and international mediators, the hybrid model of “facilitative-wise elder-mediation” was co-created.
The results achieved by then were presented in January 2014 in Addis Abba – some two and a half years after the conclusion of the training, and eighteen months after the training of trainers ended. Among others, Kalla Gezaheign Woldedawit, who performs a mediating function in his role as traditional and spiritual leader of the Konso poeple of Southern Ethiopia, reported on how he integrates elements of “modern” mediation into his work. A short video documentary was screened for the first time.
The trainers’ manual “Shimgelina under the shade – Merging Ethiopian Wise Council Mediation and Facilitative Mediation” was co-developed by the group of Ethiopian mediators, inmedio’s Dirk Splinter and Ljubjana Wuestehube as well as GIZ/ZFD. It was co-published by the Ethiopian House of Federations. The Amharic version of the training manual was launched in October 2014.
